Installation and compatibility

Use desktop Microsoft Word with WordApi 1.5 support on macOS or Windows. Follow the instructions supplied with your approved installer, including local HTTPS certificate and add-in activation steps. Word on the web and mobile are outside this beta. Packages, supported architectures and tested OS versions will be listed per release. Do not follow developer setup scripts unless support specifically supplies them.

Getting started

01

Set up your beta environment

Request beta access and confirm your Word version and IT policies with SwiftCite. Follow the supplied installation instructions, start the local service, and open the SwiftCite pane in desktop Word.

02

Create a document library

In a new Word document, choose Create library. Import files or copy selected exhibits from another library. Give exhibits clear names and select the numbering prefix you need.

03

Insert your references

Place the cursor in the body or a footnote. Select an exhibit, add an optional pinpoint, and choose Insert citation. Keep Word formatting when moving references so the managed markers remain.

04

Update and review

After moving, adding, or deleting references, choose Update Exhibits. SwiftCite numbers by first appearance. To insert an exhibit list, place the cursor in an empty paragraph in the main document and choose Insert exhibit list.

05

Build your deliverable

Choose Create exhibit bundle. Set optional conversion and stamping preferences, then download the ZIP. Check the report for conversion failures and review all numbering, pinpoints, and files before delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Does SwiftCite work offline?

Local document contents stay on your computer, but Word loads Office.js from Microsoft’s CDN and may need internet access to initialize the add-in. Fully offline startup is not guaranteed. Shared mode requires connectivity and the configured Microsoft 365 services.

What does “beta” mean here?

Features and compatibility may change, and defects or interruptions are possible. Validate the beta on copies of your documents, maintain backups, and independently review every deliverable. Collaboration remains a gated desktop pilot rather than a generally released feature.

Which files can I use?

Import individual files up to 250 MB each, with up to 50 files per import. Preview PDF, common image formats, and plain text. Content search supports text PDFs, DOCX, XLSX cell text, saved EML/MSG email, and plain text. Local OCR supports English, Spanish, and French; scanned material needs review. Other formats can be opened in their default application.

When does numbering change?

Choose Update Exhibits to renumber by first appearance and refresh lists. Inserting a new citation gives it a provisional number and leaves existing references unchanged until an update. Creating a list or bundle also reconciles the document. Each exact prefix has its own sequence.

What are the current Word limitations?

Body references and footnotes are supported. Endnotes, headers, footers, and text boxes are outside this beta. Plain-text pasting removes the markers used to update citations. Extra-report exhibits can be registered for the list, but references in Excel or PowerPoint must be updated manually if numbering changes.

Are my documents used by AI?

The current local workflow makes no AI calls and does not upload document contents through SwiftCite. OCR and indexing run locally. Explicitly enabling shared mode changes where the selected exhibits and metadata are processed; review the agreed deployment before activation.

How should I back up and check my work?

Keep independent backups of the Word document and the complete exhibit library. Stop the local service before copying its database and files. Review all references, pinpoints, generated lists, conversion reports, and bundle contents before filing or delivery. SwiftCite does not determine evidentiary admissibility or compliance with a tribunal’s rules.

Can my team collaborate?

Solo permits one SwiftCite user per document. Team and Enterprise support multiple SwiftCite users working in the same document. Beta availability: local workflows are the current foundation. Shared collaboration is a gated desktop pilot and is subject to acceptance testing. Team hosting and on-premises deployments are arranged with SwiftCite; they are not instant self-service options.

Hyperlinked exhibits in reports

Report citation and exhibit-list links need access to the relevant SwiftCite library; shared links also require Microsoft 365 permissions. They do not embed every exhibit in the Word file. A linked PDF bundle is different: extract the complete ZIP and keep Report.pdf with its Exhibits folder. Local file links may require desktop Acrobat or Reader and its security approval; browser PDF viewers may not support them.
